The railroad’s operating income rose **9% to $2.8 billion**, while its operating ratio worsened to **59.7%** from **59.0%** a year earlier, reflecting higher fuel costs despite revenue growth and productivity gains. Total operating revenues increased to **$6.864 billion** in the quarter from **$6.154 billion** a year earlier. Freight revenues rose **12%**, to **$6.518 billion**, driven by higher fuel surcharge revenue, **2% volume growth**, and core pricing gains. Union Pacific said freight fuel surcharge revenue reached **$1.0 billion** in the quarter, up from **$569 million** in the prior-year period, as fuel prices rose sharply. The company’s average locomotive diesel fuel price was **$3.86 per gallon** in the second quarter, compared with **$2.42 per gallon** in the second quarter of 2025. The company’s volume gains were led by domestic intermodal.
