Aflac Incorporated reported that its wholly owned Japanese subsidiary, Aflac Life Insurance Japan Ltd. (“Aflac Japan”), discovered a cybersecurity incident involving unauthorized access to certain systems in Japan. According to the June 30, 2026 Form 8-K, Aflac Japan found on June 25, 2026 that an unauthorized third party had unlawfully accessed some of its systems during the period from June 15, 2026 through June 25, 2026. After identifying the intrusion, Aflac Japan took containment measures intended to stop further access, including suspending certain systems. The company said Aflac Japan has continued serving policyholders despite those system suspensions. Aflac Japan has opened an investigation, which remains ongoing, and Aflac Incorporated has engaged third-party cybersecurity experts to assist with the response. While the company said the full scope and potential ultimate impact are not yet known, Aflac Japan has already determined that some impacted files contain policy and coverage details, personal information, and bank account information. The company also said Aflac Japan has notified the Japan Financial Services Agency and other relevant authorities, and plans to provide appropriate notifications to affected individuals. Aflac emphasized that the incident is limited to systems in Japan and that systems tied to its U.S. business were not accessed by the unauthorized third party. The filing was made under Item 8.01, “Other Events,” rather than reporting a securities transaction, management change, acquisition, financing, or insider activity. No share purchases or sales, option grants, vesting details, prices, transaction codes, or post-transaction ownership figures were reported. The significance of the filing is operational and risk-related: Aflac is notifying investors of a cybersecurity event that may carry legal, regulatory, reputational, financial, and customer-notification consequences, though the company said the final impact remains uncertain.
