Stocks Slide on Caution Over US-Iran Deal Hurdles: Markets Wrap
Stocks slid on Friday with technology shares taking the heaviest pressure after Accenture cut its revenue growth guidance, giving investors a concrete reason to reassess demand across IT services. The company lowered its expected revenue growth for the financial year ending August 2026 to 3% to 4%, from 4% to 5%.
Uncertainty around hurdles to a possible U.S.-Iran understanding may also have added to the cautious mood, but public detail was limited and the guidance cut was the clearer, evidence-based driver of the selloff in tech.
Indian software exporters bore the brunt of the move. Shares of Tata Consultancy Services fell more than 5%, Infosys dropped over 7% and Tech Mahindra declined more than 4%, while the Nifty IT index slid more than 5%.
Those declines underscored how quickly investors treat a change in outlook from a global sector heavyweight as a read-through for peers whose fortunes are tied to the same corporate spending pools.
The logic behind the repricing was direct. Accenture is widely watched as a barometer for enterprise technology, consulting and outsourcing budgets, so a lower growth target can signal softer client spending, slower approvals or a longer path from deal discussion to signed work.
When that signal appears, investors often move before comparable companies publish fresh numbers of their own, especially in a sector where expectations for growth can shift quickly with management commentary.
That matters because IT services depend heavily on discretionary corporate budgets, not just on essential maintenance work.
If large customers in the U.S. and Europe delay transformation projects, trim consulting assignments or stagger outsourcing decisions over a longer period, providers can feel the impact through weaker deal momentum, slower revenue growth and potential margin pressure.
Friday’s trading reflected concern over that chain of events rather than a reaction to any new earnings reports from the Indian companies themselves.
The geopolitical backdrop remained secondary. Reported complications around a possible U.S.-Iran deal appeared to temper risk appetite more broadly, though the available information did not make it possible to draw a firm line from those developments to the day’s equity moves.
In that setting, a negative guidance revision from a major services firm was enough to reinforce caution that was already present.
What investors will watch next is whether other IT-services companies also describe slower client decision-making or tighter spending controls. If management teams continue to point to resilient demand, the sector could regain some footing after an abrupt reset.
For now, the market reaction suggests investors are assigning greater weight to even modest changes in guidance when they come from companies viewed as a window into enterprise technology budgets.
